Description of the Organization

Mathematics Center consists of approximately 150 teachers, researchers, and PhD students. Our team is actively involved in PhD education and a wide range of activities within various mathematical areas. As part of the department, you will belong to a division focusing on research in algebra, analysis, and dynamical systems. This provides you with the opportunity to delve into advanced mathematical concepts and contribute to groundbreaking research in these areas. Being a PhD Student

As a PhD student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University. As a research student, you are trained in a scientific approach. This can be briefly described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently with the right methodological choices, and developing an awareness of research ethics. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your teaching abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. The research studies conclude with a dissertation and a doctoral degree.

Subject and Project Description

We are looking for a PhD student to work on a project in index theory for hypoelliptic differential operators and/or noncommutative geometry within quantum formation based on methods in spectral theory, operator algebras, global analysis, and noncommutative geometry. The nature of the project is flexible and depends on the background and interests of the PhD student.

Job Responsibilities

You will primarily focus on your PhD education, which includes participation in research projects as well as PhD courses, seminars, and conferences. You will also contribute to teaching and other departmental work (maximum 20% of working time).

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements

You meet the basic eligibility requirements for doctoral education if you have:

  • a completed degree at the advanced level or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the advanced level or
  • acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.

Specific eligibility for the PhD subject Mathematics is met if you have:

  • At least 90 higher education credits relevant to the subject area, of which at least 45 higher education credits at the advanced level.

Other Requirements

To benefit from the current PhD education, the following is also required:

  • Good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle scientific problems.
  • Good ability for written and oral communication
  • Good collaboration skills
  • Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written
  • Personal qualities required to perform the tasks and benefit from the PhD education include initiative, stability, structure, creativity, mathematical ability, and perseverance.

Meritorious

The following are meritorious for the current PhD education:

  • Knowledge of methods for spectral theory, operator algebras, global analysis, or noncommutative geometry.
  • Experience in mathematical writing and an experimental approach to mathematical problems as well as interaction with other subjects such as computer science or physics.

About the Employment

The position is a fixed-term full-time employment, starting in the fall of 2026 or by agreement. The PhD education lasts four years for full-time studies. If teaching and other departmental work is involved, the employment is extended correspondingly. Regulations regarding employment as a PhD student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
